In some areas hostels are privately owned while other may be part of a hostel association or group. Staying within a hostel association can help you understand exactly what type of environment you will be entering when you get to the facility.
Hostels are often categorized by who will stay there. You can choose the one that is right for you including youth hostels (for young adults that are traveling,) independent hostels, backpacker hostels and budget hostels that provide the lowest costs available.
